Course overview

Society of Biology

The course will enhance your understanding of how the human body
functions in health and disease at the tissue, cell and molecular
level. This varied and interesting degree course covers a wide range
of biology-based knowledge, laboratory and other practical skills.

If you choose this course you will benefit from:

staff who are active in research and consultancy which allows them to
bring this expertise into their teaching

practical expertise that will be useful in your future career

as gene amplification using PCR, cell culture, flow cytometry, tissue
staining, protein detection and bacterial growth, in modern,
well-equipped laboratories

mini-projects where you devise and carry out your own laboratory
experiments. This ensures you are able to demonstrate to future
employers that you can act independently and solve problems

and in other areas to help you to get the experience that employers
want

sales, as hospital biomedical scientists, and other jobs in science to
help you identify potential careers

benefits our students in such activities as providing specialist
speakers, placements and ultimately finding employment for our
graduates

expertise in to their teaching

The first year of the programme lays the foundation for the study of
Human Biosciences. You will cover key study and research skills in
human biology, cell and microbiology.

In the second year you will further develop your study skills and
research expertise and will begin to specialise a bit more by studying
key areas such as cell biology, molecular genetics, immunology and
physiology.

The final year of your course gives you the opportunity to carry out
an independent research project linked to one of the key topic areas.
You will also study advanced genetics, microbiology, cancer biology
and clinical physiology in depth.

Through your studies you will develop a good knowledge of a range of
disciplines and how they apply to human health and disease. This will
include both theory and lab-based classes.

View the course structure and module list from year one through to
your final year.

Career opportunities

Our Human Bioscience degree is designed to make sure you develop a
wide range of skills that will be attractive to many different types
of employers. Recent students have gone on to careers in clinical
trials for drug companies, trainee biomedical scientists in hospital
laboratories, research assistants in university laboratories or for
private companies, medical laboratory assistants, marketing assistants
and medical and scientific representatives.
