Overview

MA Queer Studies in Arts and Culture course is unique. It is the only named award at postgraduate level study in this field in the world.

This new course is the first in the UK to focus on Queer Studies and Arts Based Practice and has been designed to introduce you to both historical and contemporary arts practices and thought in relationship to subjectivity, arts and culture from an LGBTQI perspective. As a field of research Queer Studies is multi-faceted, emerging here from debates on modern and post-modern arts based material and textual practices, post-structuralist analysis, identity politics and grass-roots activism. The course has been designed to facilitate the needs of candidates from a wide range of backgrounds including (but not exclusively) artists, writers and performers from across the whole spectrum of the arts. We anticipate that the course will also be of interest to historians, critics, theorists, curators, activists, educators, health workers and community arts workers and we invite inquiries throughout the year. What we aspire to create here is an inclusive community of all sorts. 

The course is delivered at the School of Art in Margaret Street, which is a QAA* and RAE** recognised centre of excellence for art-based learning and research. It was one of the first [1884] purpose built Municipal Art Schools to be built in the country. It is Grade 1 listed and provides a fantastic 21stcentury studio based and technologically supported resource in the heart of the living city.

As part of the integrated Art-Based Masters Programme, MA Queer Studies in Arts and Culture course offers you the opportunity to develop your art based and/ or writing practice in relationship to a wide range of historical and contemporary theories and contexts.

The course is also in receipt of Arts and Humanities Research Council Block Grant support.
