Aberystwyth University, established in 1872, was the first university institution to be established in Wales. Aberystwyth is a University town and a holiday resort on the West coast of Wales with some seven thousand students, ensuring it a vibrant atmosphere throughout the year and not just during summertime. Accommodation The Halls of normally start from about £50 per week, moving up to around £80 per week for some larger universities. If you opt to not go the halls of residence option, you can always go and find your own accommodation. Rents can then range from anything from £35 for one week upwards depending on the standard of accommodation and the number of people you are going to split the costs.

Flats/ Houses
If you do move into a flat or house, you will have to sign a tenancy agreement, which is a legal document outlining the terms of the tenancy. Be very careful to make sure you fully understand the terms and issues of the contract, and if you do have any doubts talk to your international student advisor who can assist you further. A flat or house is generally more expensive than any other option, and you may find it hard to find accommodation that is close to your campus. However many students like the freedom to live where they choose, live with whom they like and choose the type of place they want to live in. The University has invested recently a lot in residences and is able to offer accommodation in an attractive, safe and neighbourly environment. Furthermore, all the residents enjoy additional benefits including computer network connections in all study-bedrooms and inclusive room contents insurance. Students will need to vacate and empty their rooms during the Christmas and Easter vacations as residence is not available during these periods. There are self-catered and catered residences. The University has 8 self-catered residences. In most of them the rooms are single study bedrooms. First of the catered residences is Penbryn where most of the rooms are single rooms and the accommodation fees include a fixed charge to cover the cost of meals approximately equivalent to one meal a day which can be taken at any of the Catering Outlets. The second catered residence, Pantycelyn, has been designated a mixed Welsh Residence where Welsh is in daily use as the main medium of communication. Annual cost for a single room with self catering varies from £2650 to £3470 and with catered meal from £3110 to £3685. Annual cost for a twin room with self catering is £2485 and with catered meal from £2710 to £3210. A sum of £100 is payable in order to reserve a room in Residence. At the start of the academic session, or on taking up residence, this sum will be allocated as Caution Money against security for the performance of student’s obligations. It is also possible to find private accommodation.
International students who are studying on a course lasting longer than six months are normally allowed to work for 20 hours per week during term-time and unlimited hours during vacations. Students may find part-time jobs as administration assistants, receptionists, customer service assistants etc. Students may find job ads in newspapers or at school. Finding job may be difficult but if you really need and want it, you will find one. You should keep in mind to have at least 4 month’s money before arrival as it may take time to find a job. If you don’t then it is advisable to work for some time before you start your studies. Student jobs hourly wage minimum is around £4.83 per hour if you are aged 18-21 years and £5.80 per hour if you are 22 or over.
