Overview

The PGCE in Secondary Education: Instrumental Music route at Birmingham City University offers trainees the opportunity to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) with experience in both secondary schools and instrumental teaching.

In recent years there have been exciting developments in instrumental teaching and we are committed to producing inspirational teachers to match these advances.

Key Facts

This is a professional teacher training course that leads to Qualified Teacher Status. It is available at both Level 6 (H) and Level 7 (M).

The course has been graded as "outstanding" by Ofsted and described as a "well-structured, highly coherent programme" which includes key strengths in "the attention given to trainees' personal well-being and the quality of the 'wrap-around' support they receive" and "trainees' outstanding ability to critically evaluate their own work to secure their own progress" (Ofsted 2010).

We are justly proud of our very high educational standards and facilities, including our fully-equipped sound recording studios and our wide range of classroom instruments which include authentic instruments from around the world.

All students are guaranteed outstanding support from both their tutors at the University – all of whom have been exceptional classroom teachers themselves – and from the partnership secondary schools, of which there are more than 200 across the Midlands.

We are fortunate to have a strong connection with Birmingham Music Service, which is run by Birmingham City Council. The Service offers music support to the city’s schools through a number of programmes that are co-ordinated by specialist instrumental and vocal teachers, as well as music therapists.
