The Johannes Kepler University (JKU) in Linz, one of the most modern universities in Austria, was founded in 1966 as an Academy for Social and Economic Sciences.

From the beginning, the university's aims have been based on a close interdisciplinary connection between Economics and Business, Social Sciences, Law, Sciences and Engineering and on the fulfilment of the current demands of business and society.

As the largest research and teaching institution in Upper Austria, and thus as a centre of knowledge transfer, the university contributes to the maintenance and the development of the region. It participates in centres of competence and develops spin-off programs supporting business start-ups. JKU has also close links with business and industry and an international network of partner and cooperation.

The Johannes Kepler University Linz has a perfect location in the north east of the city. The campus lies in green surroundings directly at the foot of the neighbouring Mühlviertel hills.

Unlike many other universities, where the individual faculties are spread out throughout the town, all faculties of the JKU are situated on a single campus covering some 350,000 m2. The athletic grounds and 3 student residences are located directly on site.

a) For students who are EU or EEA or Swiss nationals there are no restrictions concerning work in Austria as long as the fiscal and national insurance regulations are met.

Important exception: Students from Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Hungary still need a work permit before taking up gainful employment (details see in the following).

b) Students from third countries need a work permit to work in Austria. The number of work permits is limited. This permit is to be obtained by the employer before the student starts working. The permit will only be granted for either marginal part-timework (minimum income worker) or for a maximum of three months during holidays.

Work in the field of science and research or on the basis of a contract for work and labour (self-employment, Werkvertrag) (by which you are not fully employed and have to take care of your income tax and health insurance yourself) does not require a permit. Further information is available from the employment service (Arbeitsmarktservice / AMS ). Please note that your stay in Austria cannot be financed exclusively by such employment!

Your work must not compromise your studies. Non-compliance with these regulations may lead to expulsion from Austria!

c) In case your study plan recommends or requires the proof of a vocational internship (Berufspraktika) you will not need a working permit. A vocational internship is an employment (practical training) which is required by the study plan of an Austrian educational institution with public status.

The employer has to notify (Anzeigebestätigung) the employment service (Arbeitsmarktservice) and the competent authority for taxes (Abgabenbehörde) at least 2 weeks before the beginning of the employment
